Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that affects various organs, with
ocular health being one of the most vulnerable. The impact of diabetes on ocular health is
well-documented, with diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME), and other
visual impairments being common complications. This paper explores the pathophysiology of
ocular damage caused by diabetes, focusing on the mechanisms behind DR and DME.
Furthermore, the paper highlights preventive strategies, including early diagnosis, lifestyle
modifications, and pharmacological treatments, to mitigate the adverse effects of diabetes on
vision. The aim is to increase awareness of the importance of monitoring ocular health in
diabetic patients and to propose evidence-based strategies to prevent and manage diabetes-
related eye conditions.
